Cardiac ischemia
This type of ischemia my be asymptomatic or cause chest pain and is the most common cause of death in western countries. It is otherwise known as angina pectoris. It occurs when the myocardium or heart muscle, receives insufficient blood flow. The cause of this is often atherosclerosis, This is often caused by the long-term accumulation of cholesterol-rich plaques in the coronary arteries.
Skin also called Cutaneous - This is caused by decreased or lessened blood flow to the skin layers and can cause the skin to become discorlored.
Brain
This is caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain and can be chronic (long lasting) or acute. Chronic isemia of the brain can cause a form of dementia known as vascular dementia.
Bowel
Ischemia of the large intestine may result in an inflammatory process called ischemic colitis. Ischemia can also affect the small bowel and is known as mesenteric ischemia.
Limb - Lack of blood flow to an arm or leg results in acute limb Ischemia.
Ischemnia is a condition that is caused when blood flow is kept from a certain part of the body. There are many kinds of ischemnia whereby the different kinds correspond to the different parts of the body targeted. For example cardiac ischemnia is when there is blockage of blood supply to the heart. The blockage of the blood supply often caused by a narrowing of the arteries, if the arteries are narrowed there will be a less amount of oxygen able to reach the heart. This condition is called heart disease and heart disease can lead to heart attack.
A common symptom o ischemnia is is angina pectoris or chest pain.
Concerning heart ischemnia, there can be silent ischemnia, in which case various medical tests may be used to diagnose the disease such as an electrocardiogram whereby a monitor is used to monitor the heart.
